The Central Integrated Pest Management Center (CIPMC), Lucknow, is a government organization under the Directorate of Plant Protection, Quarantine & Storage, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. It focuses on promoting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices to reduce the use of chemical pesticides and enhance sustainable agriculture.
During the visit, students explored several laboratories at CIPMC, each one focusing on a specific area of research and development in pest management:
a. Biocontrol Laboratory: - This lab specializes in the production of biological control agents, such as parasitoids etc. The students saw the demonstration of the use of Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae fungi for pest management.
b. Pheromone Laboratory: - This lab focuses on the development and testing of pheromone-based traps for pest monitoring. Students were introduced to pheromone lures used for specific pests like pink bollworm and fruit flies. They also learned how pheromone traps are deployed in fields to attract pests for monitoring and control.
c. Pathology Laboratory: - Dedicated to studying plant diseases caused by pathogens such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Students examined plant samples under microscopes and learned about common crop diseases and their biocontrol solutions.
d. Toxicology Laboratory: - This lab is involved in testing pesticide residues in agricultural produce to ensure food safety. The students were shown advanced instruments like Gas Chromatography (GC) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for residue analysis.
e. Entomology Laboratory: - Focuses on the identification and study of insect pests. Students identified various pests and their life stages, and gained knowledge about the techniques for pest monitoring and identification.

Besides visiting the labs, CIPMC officials briefed students on the significance of IPM and the centre’s contributions to sustainable agriculture.
Students, led by Mr. Faraz Ahmad and Mr. Amit Singh, actively participated in Q&A sessions, discussing the practical applications of IPM techniques and challenges faced by farmers.
