Report of Research-Oriented visit to
BIRBAL SAHNI INSTITUTE OF PALAEOSCIENCES (BSIP), LUCKNOW
29th January 2025 (Wednesday)
A research-oriented visit to the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP), Lucknow, was organized by the Department of Science (Maharishi School of Science and Humanities, MUIT Lucknow Campus) for the students of B. Sc. (II and IV semesters) and M. Sc. (Zoology and Botany, II semester) programs on January 29, 2025. The primary objective of the visit was to immerse students in a dynamic research environment, inspiring them to pursue careers in science and fostering a deeper understanding of Palaeosciences, particularly in areas such as fossil preservation, age determination, and Earth history.
At BSIP, Dr. Ranveer Singh Negi delivered a comprehensive presentation on the institute’s pioneering activities, shedding light on diverse research opportunities for students. His talk covered the geological time scale, fossil identification and preservation, and the challenges faced in palaeosciences. Students were introduced to intricate methodologies, including analytical, biological, and chemical techniques, essential for fossil discovery and research.
One of the highlights of the visit was the exploration of BSIP’s advanced research facilities. The students toured specialized laboratories equipped with cutting-edge instruments, including Scanning Electron Microscopy, Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, Carbon Dating systems, and advanced Geochemistry tools. These technologies offered the students an unparalleled learning experience, enhancing their appreciation for sophisticated scientific techniques and their applications in understanding Earth’s history. In addition to facility tours, a key feature of the visit, was hands-on demonstrations of fossil cutting, preparation, and carbon dating methodologies by Dr. Gaurav, Dr. Hukam Singh, Dr. Shivali, and their project associates. Dr. Hukam Singh’s session on resin and amber fossils was particularly engaging, as he detailed their formation, preservation, and scientific significance. His interactive demonstrations allowed students to witness the meticulous processes involved in fossil analysis and understand their role in reconstructing ancient ecosystems and environmental conditions. These sessions not only enhanced the students’ technical knowledge but also sparked interest in pursuing research in the field of palaeoscience, through interaction with BSIP’s scientific and technical staff.
This academic excursion was a collaborative success, organized by Dr. Sneha Verma and Dr. Kanchan Awasthi, (Department of Science) and Mr. Kaustubh Misra (MIRC). Special thanks to our Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bhanu Pratap Singh, Registrar Dr. Girish Chimmwal, Dean-Academics Dr. Neeraj Jain, Dean of the School of Science Dr. Rupam Singh, Deputy Dean Dr. Ramakant and Sr. AO Dr. Rajesh Singh, for their unwavering support and encouragement, which ensured the success of this endeavor.
