Industrial Visit to Amul-Banas Dairy, Lucknow Plant

Objective:

On 17th February 2025, a group of 52 MBA students from Maharishi School of Business Management, Maharishi University of Information Technology, Lucknow embarked on an enriching industrial visit to Amul-Banas Dairy, Lucknow. The visit aimed to provide students with firsthand experience of the dairy industry's operations, from milk procurement to product distribution. Dr Babita Dubey and Dr Praveen Joshi, faculty coordinators, guided the student throughout the visit.

Visit Details:

The visit commenced with a warm welcome from Mr. Venkatesh, the Amul coordinator. Mr. Venkatesh provided a comprehensive overview of Amul's history, its cooperative model, and its significance in India's dairy sector. He then proceeded to guide the students through the various stages of milk processing, emphasizing the importance of quality control and hygiene at every step.

Mr. Venkatesh explained the entire production process in detail, starting with the procurement of fresh milk from local dairy farmers. He elaborated on the rigorous quality checks conducted upon milk arrival, including tests for fat content, protein content, and microbial contamination. The students observed the pasteurization process, where milk is heated to kill harmful bacteria, followed by homogenization to ensure uniform fat distribution.

The visit then moved to the production floor where students witnessed the manufacturing of various dairy products, including milk, curd, butter, ghee, and ice cream. They observed the automated packaging lines, ensuring hygienic and efficient product handling. The emphasis on maintaining stringent quality control measures throughout the production process was evident, from raw material inspection to final product packaging.

Students also learned the importance of proper washing and sanitization procedures at every stage of production to maintain hygiene and prevent contamination. He explained the company's commitment to sustainable practices, including waste management and energy conservation.

The visit concluded with a brief session on Amul's supply chain and distribution network. Amul coordinators explained how Amul maintains a robust cold chain to ensure the quality and freshness of its products throughout the distribution process. He also emphasized the role of technology in streamlining operations and enhancing efficiency. A highly engaging Q&A session followed, featuring key personnel such as the plant manager, production supervisor, and quality control experts. Students actively participated, discussing industry challenges, technological advancements, and career prospects within the dairy manufacturing sector.

To conclude the insightful visit, students were offered a refreshing Amul ice cream, a delightful end to an informative experience.

The students expressed overwhelmingly positive feedback regarding the industrial visit. They appreciated the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of the dairy industry's operations, from milk procurement to product distribution. The interactive explanations by Mr. Venkatesh and the opportunity to observe the production process firsthand were particularly valuable. Students found the emphasis on quality control, hygiene, and sustainability to be particularly insightful.

Overall, the industrial visit to Amul Dairy proved to be an enriching and insightful experience for the MBA students. It provided them with valuable practical knowledge and enhanced their understanding of the dairy industry and its operations.
