The objective of the Mega Cleaning Drive, held on April 22, 2025, by the Department of Humanities in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) and Bisleri’s Bottles for Change, was to instil environmental responsibility among students and raise awareness about sustainable practices, particularly plastic waste management.

Participating Students: Students from various disciplines.

Event Details: As part of the Earth Day celebrations, the Mega Cleaning Drive was launched in the New Building of the Department of Humanities at MUIT, Lucknow Campus. The event commenced with an inspiring keynote address by Dr. Sapan Asthana, Program Officer of NSS Unit-1. In his speech, he focused the urgent need for environmental stewardship and emphasized the pivotal role of youth in driving sustainable change. He encouraged students to integrate eco-friendly habits into their everyday lives and to take active responsibility for the preservation of the planet.

Following his address, an enlightening and interactive awareness session was conducted by Mr. Shubham Mishra, a representative of Bisleri’s Bottles for Change campaign. Mr. Mishra engaged the students in a thought-provoking discussion on the growing menace of plastic pollution. He elaborated on the long-term environmental impacts of plastic waste, particularly its contribution to landfill accumulation and marine degradation. The session also introduced students to effective plastic waste management practices and the principles of a circular economy, emphasizing the importance of recycling and responsible consumer behaviour.

After the session, students enthusiastically participated in the cleaning drive, equipped with gloves, waste collection bags, and other cleaning tools. Under the guidance of faculty members and NSS coordinators, they carried out a comprehensive cleaning of the New Building premises. Special attention was given to the segregation of plastic from other types of waste, reinforcing the practical application of the concepts discussed during the awareness session. The segregated plastic waste was responsibly handed over to the Bottles for Change team to ensure proper recycling and disposal.

Students’ feedback: The initiative was enthusiastically received by students, who found it both educational and empowering. It provided practical insights into environmental sustainability and allowed them to contribute meaningfully to campus cleanliness. The experience deepened their awareness of waste management and inspired many to adopt eco-friendly habits and participate in future community-driven initiatives.
